We are so proud of the beautiful fabric that our Tasi pieces are crafted from, so we thought we would take the opportunity to share a little about Tencel and why it is so good for both people and planet.
Our garments are made from an innovative biodegradable textile called TENCEL®, which is part of the Lyocell family and one of the most environmentally friendly fabrics available. Tencel is regenerated from sustainably grown wood cellulose from the eucalyptus tree, and all of the chemicals used in production are nontoxic. Because of the nature of the material, the processing never requires bleach. The cellulose is treated in a closed loop system, meaning no waste is produced and the solvents are recycled with a recovery rate of 99.5%. This unique closed loop process received the "European Award for the Environment" from the European Union.
The eucalyptus tree itself is a very sustainable resource as it is extremely fast-growing and requires low water and virtually no pesticide inputs in order to grow, in comparison to conventional cotton which requires 2,700 litres of water to make one t-shirt and consumes 16% of the world's insecticide use.
On top of it's huge environmental benefits, Tencel is also more absorbent than cotton, softer than silk and cooler than linen, making it perfect for travel and everyday wear. It is also antibacterial, dries quickly, is wrinkle resistant and drapes beautifully.
You really do have to see and feel this fabric to experience it properly, you can check out our full Tencel collection here.
