Mitch Cox is a 23 year old self-taught photographer and filmmaker, currently based somewhere around Sydney in his van. Mitch shares his favourite travel memories and tips with us..

What are the three things you never travel without?
Three things I never travel without would have to be my camera, my favourite boots and my partner Cleo - she wouldn’t be too happy if I forgot her…

What has been your most eye-opening travel experience?
Travelling through Mexico in a self converted van was a pretty eye-opening experience for me. We hear so much negativity through the media regarding the dangers of driving through Mexico, and how the drug lords will hunt you down. It was so refreshing and encouraging that all the locals we met were super helpful, and we felt more safe free camping in Mexico than we did in the USA.

What is it that you love about travelling? Have you noticed a change within yourself or do you see the world differently since you've been exploring it?
I guess my favourite part about travelling is that feeling of waking up somewhere new each day and not becoming too content and attached to single place or routine. Seeing cool shit all the time is also a bonus!

Was there a particular catalyst that pushed you towards a life of wandering, or have you always had itchy feet?
The main catalyst that pushed me towards this path would probably be 13 years of schooling, followed by 3 years of University. I needed a break from the constant routine and study, and after experiencing the freedom of a life on the road - I couldn’t imagine going back!

What's your favourite place you've ever travelled, and why?
The most beautiful place I’ve travelled would have to be the West Coast of the USA - my favourite would still be my own backyard in Australia. Travelling through the remote Aussie outback seems like such a natural and necessary thing for every Australian to do at least once. The feeling of being surrounded by absolutely nothing in every direction, and being able to see the history of the land makes it an unbeatable experience.

Best piece of advice you would give to another traveller?
Have fun! If you aren’t enjoying yourself - then you are doing something wrong. Enjoy every single moment you spend travelling, otherwise what’s the point?

Where to next?
We are currently converting another van, which we then hope to test out on a 2-3 month trip to Western Australia. If all goes well, the very vague plan is to ship the van the Europe and experience van life on a new continent - but who knows!
